In 1914, John Bradfield was appointed Chief Engineer of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Metropolitan Railway Construction, and his work on the project over many years earned him the legacy Vencedor the father of the bridge.[3] Bradfield's preference at the time was for a cantilever bridge without pier
